The Florida Keys!!
Yes folks, to add to my idyllic life of leisure, I'm spending a week in the Keys with some girl family members. History: every year the ladies on my mom's side get together for a girls weekend. Last year it was Cape Cod. The year before was North Carolina. Next year... who knows?!
So, my mother, 2 aunts and I left NC at 5am Wednesday morning and arrived in Orlando that afternoon, after a lunch stop in St. Simons, GA. We stayed the night at an aunt and uncles house and hit the road around 9 this morning. After a stop in Boca Raton for a sushi lunch with one of my best friends, Adria, we hit the Keys this afternoon.
So, that's that for now. Expect not to hear from me for a few days (what else is new).

Interesting indeed...
So, my fun little post yesterday has received some interesting comments. One, specifically, from an anonymous person who came across my blog upon a friend's recommendation. This person has decided that he/she knows all about me from reading a couple blogs for half an hour. Those who know me read the humor in my post, and responded the same way in a slew of emails yesterday.
So, listen up Mr./Mrs. Unwanted Anonymous Responder To My Blog, I don't mind if you read my blog and post responses. I do mind, however, that you think it's ok to barge into my life with your negativity, acting as if you knew where I'm coming from and where I'm going and don't even have the cojones to leave your name.
I never accused anyone of being a "greedy workaholic". I merely stated my opinion of a severely long workday beginning before dawn because it's not the life choice I'd make. As far as living an "idyllic life of leisure", you're partly correct. I do live a wonderful life; one which I've built quite happily for myself. I'm surrounded by fun, happy people. I work 6 days a week doing what I love, pay my bills like a "responsible grown up" and still have time to take a walk, play a game or enjoy a bubble bath. Does loving my job and having the time to enjoy life's pleasures make me such a horrible person? Yikes.
Perhaps you are just playing devil's advocate, or perhaps you are one of those who listens to books on tape (in which case, kudos to you. I don't have the patience). Perhaps, still, you're one of those unhappy people I was talking about. Whatever your story is, I don't venture to judge you as you have judged me because I recognize that I have no idea who you are, just as you don't know me.
I think if you go back and read over what I said, you'll find the humor and hear the tongue-in-cheek tone with which I wrote. If not, then perhaps you would do well to not read about my fun-beyond-your-scope life. Clearly it bothers you :o)

Can we talk about something for a minute, here?
Commuting. Pre-dawn commuting. These words are foreign to me, honestly.
Actors, by nature, are night dwellers. We go to work when most people are leaving their jobs, and when we finally say goodnight, the "milkman's on his way". So, this morning when I woke up at 430AM to drive Curren and his dad to the airport, I was not prepared for the phenomenon known as 6AM rush hour. I looked around me at the other people driving on the highway, and I did not see one smile. I didn't see anyone rocking out to a song on the radio, talking on the phone to a loved one... Seriously, folks? Do we as Americans have nothing better to do with our time than go to work before the sun rises? No wonder we die young. No wonder nothing gets done in a timely fashion in Washington; people are at lunch by 9 and taking an "afternoon" nap by 10. There is no give on the other end, either. Even thought their work day begins at the butt crack of dawn (or before!) they stay there until 5pm or later, only to arrive home at 630 or later (it takes that long to get home because nobody actually lives in or near DC; go google housing prices and you'll see why) and they go to bed a 830 in order to get their full 8 hours. What about family time? Game time? TV time? Bubble baths? Dinner?! Sheesh.
I think there should be a ban on the workday starting before 10, and lasting more than 6 hours, including a half hour for lunch and a half hour nap. Don't studies show that work productivity decreases after 5 or 6 hours? Studies also show that people who nap in the afternoon are healthier, happier, have lower blood pressure, cholesterol and are less likely to overeat. As a nation so completely obsessed with health and nutrition, it's amazing, to me, everything we do to counteract the good things we do for our bodies and lives by going to work from cantsee to stillcantsee for 8 or 10 hours, sitting behind a desk for most of that time, not napping... no thank you.
Now, I myself was once part of this heinous torture. When I was working at WorkHorse, dad and I got up stupid early to go to work. However, at least the sun was rising on our way to work. The people here are at work for 2 hours before the sun even starts hitting the snooze button. Here again, our workday ended at 3, whereas here, the workday still ends at 5! And people wonder why they're not happy or satisfied with their lives? Cello.
Now, I will say this; I'm sure, out of the hundreds, there are maybe 5 or so people who actually enjoy being a part of the rat race, maybe more. To those people I say, more power to you. To the people who don't enjoy it, see it as a form of torture, etc, I say... why?
See, I'm not against an early-ish workday to get out earlier in the afternoon. I'm not against traveling to get to work. I'm against the aforementioned topics if they make you miserable. If you hate it, stop it.
After all, "you can't take it with you".

February!? Are you kidding me!?
I'm not kidding when I say; where has the time gone?! I absolutely cannot believe it's February already. I feel like New Year's was just last week or so! And I've only blogged 3 times!? Lame.
So, Millie is up and running now, and I'm having a blast working backstage. I'm doing makeup for this one woman in the show, Deb, and she's a Geisha, so I took her wig and made it into a Geisha "do" (with some help from a friend of mine) and I do her face all white with red lips and red and black eyes. She looks pretty damn cool, if you ask me :o) I do have some ridiculously quick changes with Millie, but the rest of the time, I run around putting false eyelashes on (other peoples, not mine), stitching hems, zipping, buttoning, pinning wigs... it's good times, really. I'm still involved with the kids show running the light board. My friend Dan is up in the booth with me and we're pretty much trouble. Luckily, we haven't missed any cues during the show, what with all of our shenanigans.
I did audition for the next kid show, Willy Wonka, but I wasn't offered the part I auditioned for so I politely declined, which the director wasn't too happy about. I don't feel bad, however, because there is already a ton of drama in the show, most of which stems from the girl who got the part I auditioned for and the director's attitude. Well, C'est la vie!
I'm happier still that I declined the role because few days ago I was approached by 2 friends of mine (an older couple who are heavily involved in the community and theater) to be part of a production of Arthur Miller's "All My Sons". For those who are familiar, I'm playing the part of Lydia. The show will take place at a theater in downtown Fredericksburg called the "Rude Mechanics". The theater went dark in the mid 90's and Barbara and Mel (the friends who approached me)along with another friend of mine, John and some prominent community members are trying to resurrect the theater, re-opening it with this production of AMS. Apparently, Barbara told me, when they were all reading the show together, my name came up for the part of Lydia. I've never read it, but shes says I'm perfect for the role. We'll start rehearsals in the next week or so, and the show runs the first 2 weekends in May. I can't tell you how excited I am to be doing real theater again! No more frivolous musical fluff! Musicals have been fun for a while, don't get me wrong, but I've been missing meaningful theater for a long time!
Yesterday, Curren and I "celebrated" Valentine's Day early, since he'll be on the west coast visiting his grandmother and battling for a week. As timing would have it, I leave for NC, FL and beyond on the day he returns from his trip. I think Valentine's Day is crap, personally, but he felt bad being away so we went to DC for the day. We took the Metro into the city and visited the original Smithsonian, the new Native American Indian museum and the National Gallery of Art. After all of that, we had dinner at an Irish pub in downtown DC. I'm pretty sure we walked 87 miles yesterday, which was fantastic. I totally broke down and got him VD gifts, though. He always talks about the different plaids that everyone wears to the battles so I got him 2 pairs of plaid pj pants to lounge around in when he's not battling, and a poster with French cognac and a green goblin on it that he wanted. All in all, it was a good day :o)
