So... it's been a while, but only a few things have changed. Babes in Toyland closed last Saturday, the 12th and we're now working on opening Jack and The Giant this Sat. I'm running lights for Jack, which is kind of a nice change. I didn't design the entire show, but I did help with some cues if I didn't like the lighting that was set. So far, it's a pretty easy gig, but I know I don't even know the half of lighting, and I'm ok with that :o) Do I miss Babes in Toyland, you may ask? Heck no! I had fun doing the show only because of the actors I had the privilege of working with. The script was horrible, the cuts made in the script (to make to running time of the show shorter) were horrible... The music was decent, but the direction was horrible and I never really felt solid in the show mostly because, I think, we only did it once a week. Nevertheless, it was a fun show, but I'm not going to miss it. What I will miss, however, is all the kids lining up for pictures or hugs after the show. That is, and always will be, my favorite part of any show.
Beauty and the Beast is also rapidly coming to a close, which I never thought possible. It seems like only last week or so we were doing a ridiculously hard tap dance callback for ensemble and I was trying to look my tallest to play Babette... Then the scary rehearsals when we didn't have a choreographer and everyone thought the show would close before it even opened... The miracle of getting an amazing choreographer from the Broadway cast of B&B... Then having a set, not having a set, having a set, not having a set. Finally getting a set, only to have it be not really what we anticipated... But, everything fell into place the way it always does and by opening night we were more ready than anyone thought we could have been, considering the setbacks... I love live theater!
Thoroughly Modern Millie is opening the first weekend of February and I've agreed to be a personal dresser to the girl playing Millie. I was asked several times to be an ensemble swing for the show and I said no way. If you're unfamiliar with the term "swing" in the theater world, it means you learn everyones part and be ready to go on at a moments notice for any given part you know (or don't know, in some instances). Not only do I have no tap experience, I don't have the energy in life right now to cover 9 different tapping roles and understudy one of the secondary leading roles. No thanks. I'm taking a break and doing costumes and I'm loving it. I don't think it'll last long, but I'm going to ride this wave til it dumps me off :o)
So, that's my story... and I'll stick to it until I decide to change it :o)
